Somali Referee Omar Artan Receives Hero’s Welcome in Nairobi After World Cup Visa Setback, Named for UEFA Super Cup

Somali FIFA referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan received an emotional hero’s welcome in Nairobi, Kenya, on Friday as political leaders, football administrators, and members of the Somali community gathered to celebrate one of Africa’s most respected match officials.

The reception, held at BBS Mall in Eastleigh, came just weeks after Artan’s dream of officiating at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was cut short when he was reportedly denied entry into the United States following security vetting issues despite being selected by FIFA.

The event was attended by several prominent leaders, including Kenya’s Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohamed, MP Farah Maalim, Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, and BBS Mall Chairman Abdiweli Mohamed Hassan, all of whom praised Artan’s remarkable contribution to African football.

Speaking during the ceremony, Artan expressed his appreciation for the support he has consistently received from Kenya throughout his refereeing career.

“For me, it’s fantastic, especially football in Kenya. I always worked with the Kenyan assistants… And now, I feel like I am at home,” Artan said.

Leaders Condemn Treatment of Somali Referee

Addressing guests at the event, Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi described the gathering as a show of solidarity following the treatment Artan received after being denied entry into the United States.

The governor said the setback should not define the Somali official’s career, expressing confidence that even greater opportunities await him.

Ahmed Abdullahi also revealed that Wajir County is in discussions with the Football Kenya Federation about hosting this year’s Chapa Dimba tournament at the county’s newly built international stadium.

He added that should Wajir be selected as the host venue, the county would be delighted to welcome Artan to officiate the tournament final.

World Cup Dream Ends, But Another Major Appointment Arrives

Artan had been named by FIFA among the referees expected to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, reports indicate he was denied entry into the United States despite efforts by the Somali Embassy in Nairobi to assist him in securing travel documentation, including a diplomatic passport.

While the setback denied him one of the biggest moments of his career, it has not diminished his standing in world football.

In a significant boost, Artan has now been appointed to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, where Paris Saint-Germain will face Aston Villa in Salzburg.

The appointment further underlines the confidence international football authorities continue to place in the Somali referee, who was also named CAF Referee of the Year 2025.

For many within African football, the reception in Nairobi was more than a celebration—it was recognition of a referee whose professionalism and resilience continue to inspire despite recent challenges.

As Artan prepares to take charge of another major European fixture, his journey remains a powerful reminder that setbacks can be followed by even greater opportunities.
